Job in the spotlight: Ivana Petrova, kitchen team member

Ivana: “I always come in with a smile on my face and immediately get to work on preparing breakfast. After that, I work the cash register. After the morning shift, I go to the kitchen and prepare different salads and sandwiches. At lunchtime I’m at the bar handing out sandwiches and salads to our soldiers.”

What qualities does someone need to have to do this job well?
Ivana: “Perseverance, a love for food, and customer friendliness. You’re not just stirring pots or working in the kitchen, you also have to serve people. So it’s important that you always give them a friendly welcome and help with questions. You also have to have a positive attitude and above all: be yourself.”

You are also working as part of a team. How important is teamwork in your job?
Ivana: “Very important. Communication is crucial if you want the meals to be served without problems every day.”

How did you end up at Umami?
Ivana: “I have worked in kitchens for 10 years, and I like working with food. During corona, I had to look for a new job, and I started working for Umami. I haven’t regretted it a single day.”

So what makes working at Umami so great?
Ivana: “The colleagues. We can really rely on each other, and I think that’s very important. The customers also make the work very enjoyable. They are very grateful for the work we do, and they always show their appreciation with a smile and a chat.”
